Forget about the default, built-in file manager offered by the Windows operating system (that would be Windows Explorer). There are third party alternatives that are packed with useful functionality, third party alternatives that are much more useful than Windows Explorer. Such an alternative is the dual-pane, user friendly, efficient and speedy file manager Speed Commander. It is packed with useful features that will help you manage your files.

To get started with Speed Commander you will first have to download an 8.8 installation file, run it, and click “Installieren” in the prompt that shows up. Installieren is German for “install” – then you will be presented with a prompt in English that asks you to select the installation directory, pick if you want a desktop icon, enter customer info, and pick one of the supported languages (English and German). Hit OK and the installation process will complete.

People who have used file managers before should immediately feel at home with Speed Commander. The application features a dual-pane interface, with buttons for the drives and other functions at the top (if you want to, you can add more buttons to the interface). It is a popular format for file managers, popular mainly because it is efficient. From this user friendly interface you can easily access all the functionality offered by Speed Commander.

And speaking about functionality, Speed Commander does everything you would expect a properly good file manager to do. You can easily navigate and find the files you need. You can view, copy, paste, print, delete, wipe, move, rename, split, and compress files. You can easily access system folders, Start menu entries, and Favorites. You can run programs and access the command prompt. You can sync data, connect to a FTP server, format the disk, edit macros, access drive status info, and browse the web. I particularly liked the last bit, the fact that you can surf the web with Speed Commander.

All the wonderful functionality of Speed Commander is not provided free of charge, and that’s a downside. The upside is that you have a lot of time to test the program for free. You can use a fully functional trial for a period of 60 days. Speed Commander has a lot to offer, so you will actually need such a long period of time to uncover all its functionality.

Speed Commander is just a properly good file manager. It’s a must have for anyone who wants an efficient means of managing files.

Pros

Works with 32 and 64-bit Windows editions. Provides language support for English and German. Familiar dual-pane interface that can be customized. All the features you would expect from a properly good file manager. Lengthy trial period of 60 days (the trial is fully functional).

Cons

The setup wizard’s first prompt is in German (click Installieren to get started).
